When the Gardener Sleeps, the Devil Sows Weeds.

When the gardener sleeps, the devil sows weeds. There is no better way to describe the initial state of the garden, although in our case, it was ivy.

The Front Garden – Or the Slope of Horrors.

In recent years, not much time or effort has been invested in the garden at Overlook Lodge. Consequently, we found a true wilderness here: various conifers, shrubs, dead trees, and above all, ivy covered the entire slope. The first priority was to properly clear the area. Since heavy equipment (excavators, wheel loaders) could only be used to a limited extent, most of it was pure manual labor.

The First Successes Are Visible

Even though the work is more than arduous, it is always rewarding to see in the evening what has been accomplished throughout the day.

A Short Break in the Spring Sun Is a Must!

Moving Forward...
New Plants Move Into the Future Garden Paradise.

It is a wonderful feeling when, after all the effort, new greenery is finally planted. We hope that the still delicate little plants will now take root well and transform our “Slope of Horrors” into a sea of blossoms next year.

The Garden Is Alive!

We have already reported that our garden is teeming with insects. However, we have also been able to observe other animals. On some days, we had up to 5 slow worms (in brown, gold, and silver) visiting during our gardening work (don’t worry, they are completely harmless and prefer to hide under stones). Pretty snails, salamanders, grasshoppers, and occasionally the neighbor’s cat also make an appearance here.

The Work Leaves Its Mark.

Despite gloves, tape, and long clothing, the work leaves its mark. Several pairs of gloves did not survive the gardening. Fortunately, everything has healed again 🙂

Off to the Easter Bonfire

We “disposed of” 2 large construction containers of shrub cuttings, 2 cords of firewood, and 7 trailer loads of ivy from the front garden alone. A portion was sent for shredding and later mulching. Another part became firewood for the home stove. The ivy, which we truly began to hate, finds its final purpose at the next Easter bonfire.

The Back Garden, a Snacking Paradise.

One of the projects for the coming spring is our snack garden. Here, we want to grow various types of fruit and herbs for our guests. These can be used in the kitchen during your stay at Overlook Lodge. More on this soon…
