One of the Darkest Regions in All of Germany
This fascinating natural spectacle is no coincidence, but scientifically measurable. The Kellerwald Edersee Nature Park is one of the regions with the least light pollution in Germany. While artificial light heavily obscures the view in densely populated metropolitan areas, measurements in our forests reach values of up to 21.8 mag/arcsec² on the astronomical brightness scale. The higher this value, the more natural and undisturbed the night appears.
The Initiative for the Official Dark Sky Park
To permanently protect this precious nocturnal landscape, the region—and particularly the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park—is actively working towards certification as an official Dark Sky Park. The aim of this initiative is to further reduce artificial light sources, preserve the natural habitat of nocturnal animals, and reconnect people with the valuable natural experience of true darkness.
