Edersee Atlantis
When History Emerges
Old Asel with its bridge, Old Bringhausen, Old Berich, and the Berich Hammer surface
This summer, Lake Edersee reveals its most mysterious side. Due to exceptionally low water levels, the so-called Edersee Atlantis becomes visible – the villages that had to make way for the construction of the Edersee Dam over 110 years ago. What usually lies hidden deep beneath the surface now reappears, transforming the valley floor into an impressive landscape of historic walls, ancient paths, and vast fields.
Particularly impressive is the view of Old Asel, whose remnants stretch around the famous Old Asel Bridge. The four-arch stone bridge from the 19th century stands completely exposed and can be crossed dry-footed. All around, old road layouts, wall remains, and the structure of the former village are discernible. A walk through the past that attracts many visitors every year.
Further south, Old Bringhausen also becomes visible. Here, the foundations of former residential houses, stables, and barns can be recognized. The wide, bright areas around the village site are the former fields of the inhabitants who once cultivated the fertile Eder Valley. If the water level drops further, the remains of the Bringhausen Bridge often appear, another silent witness to the submerged settlements.
Even more impressive is the sight of Old Berich, whose ruins stand out particularly clearly. The village site is located near the Berich Hut, a popular viewpoint from which the exposed structures can be easily seen. Here, the history of the Eder Valley becomes especially tangible: walls, paths, and the shape of the old village center are clearly visible, telling the story of a place that was once vibrant and later had to yield to the water.

A special highlight is the Berich Hammer, a former hammer mill whose remains become visible at very low water levels. The foundations and parts of the old workshop structures serve as a reminder that the Eder Valley was once an important location for craftsmanship and early industry.
For guests of the Overlook Lodge, the Edersee Atlantis offers an extraordinary experience during these weeks. The blend of nature, history, and the quiet atmosphere of the exposed valley floor makes a visit an unforgettable moment. Those exploring Lake Edersee now will experience the region in a rare and fascinating form, mystical, rich in history, and full of unique photo opportunities.
